This Amazing Japanese Hotel Has Been Welcoming Guests For 1,311 Years

When it comes to family heirlooms, Fujiwara Mahito has taken the crown. The hotelier established Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Japan’s Yamanashi prefecture in 705AD and it’s stayed in his family for an astounding 52 generations--making the traditional inn 1,311 years old this year.

In fact, the landmark holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s oldest hotel. It’s far away from pretty much everything. It’s closes attractions, Mount Fuji and Jigokudani Monkey Park, are two and a half hours and almost four hours drive away, respectively.

The place has hosted people from politicians to samurai and military commanders. If only the walls could talk in this place…

 According to the owners, it is particularly popular during the warring periods because of the beneficial effects of the spring water on aching muscles.

Last year, Modern Notion reported that the hotel was digging a new 888 metre well that would make it the hot spring resort with the most amount of water produced per minute.

There are four open-air bath with the view of the mountainous surroundings as well as two indoor baths that aren’t so exposed to the elements.

Guests are given traditional robes to wear and are expected to take off their outdoor shoes when they enter the building. This might just be one of the most luxurious places without wifi. One night at this hotel, for two people, including dinner and breakfast, starts from $312.

Throughout this time period the hotel has only ever been shut for short term maintenance and renovations, with the most recent having taken place in 1998. It features contemporary Japanese décor, and features many hot springs and is situated amongst a breath taking mountain landscape

Current guests will have to make do without television or the internet, as both aren’t provided in the hotel. But this seems totally understandable given the quant location that is perfect for getting away from the hustle and bustle of modern life to relax, unwind and recharge.

 What is even more incredible is the fact that the hotel has been run by one family for its entirety, dating back 52 generations – talk about a family business!
